Master of Fine Arts Program

  • Professional theatre training
  • Three-year, individualized, tutorial-based curriculum
  • Practical, production-based education
  • Portfolio development
  • Professional residency
  • Assistantship
  • Full tuition waiver

This is the formal reality. The truth and the spirit of the MFA in Theatre Arts at Virginia Tech go beyond these simple facts.

The practical reality is driven by a vision of professional theatre training that is most concerned with the formation of a specific attitude toward the artistic process—a way of thinking based on the changing realities of today's contemporary theatre. It is a vision grounded in

  • Collaboration,
  • Relevance, and
  • Sustainability,

favoring knowledge of current affairs and professional practice, within an awareness of our sometimes common, sometimes uncommon cultural heritages.

Led by the artistic outlook of a faculty that has gathered together in Blacksburg over a number of years from varied professional backgrounds, the purpose of the program is to prepare students for positions of leadership in the profession.  We believe leadership in the theater is based on a deep understanding of and skills in collaboration amongst artists and with members of our communities beyond the boundaries of our theater buildings.
